Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease, characterised by repetitive attacks of breathlessness and wheezing. During an Asthma attack, the inner lining of the bronchial tubes swell which in turn causes the airways to narrow, get inflamed and produce extra mucus. This narrowing of the airways turns the respiratory system increasingly sensitive to irritants in the environment. When the respiratory tract is sensitive to these irritants, it constricts itself which reduces the flow of oxygen into the body.
Asthma can be caused when a person is exposed to allergens, irritants, and pollutant matter in the air. It is more likely to be caused in children as their immune systems are not fully developed, so they develop asthma as a result of their exposure to allergens and pollutants. However, asthma is most frequently hereditary and flows in a family tree.
Asthma cannot be cured but its symptoms are treated by a Doctor, through oral medicines or inhalers of two types of therapies: rescues medicines or broncho-dilators and preventor medicines or steroids.
